English name: Creeping feather-moss
A pleurocarpous species with mid to dark green, irregularly branched shoots that form intricate patches. The narrowly egg-shaped leaves have a tapering tip. Capsules, held on a long seta, are curved and cylindrical with a white calyptra.
Capsules mature from spring to late summer.
In Scotland, Amblystegium serpens is widespread at lower altitudes on living and dead elders in woods and hedges, at the base of walls, and on stones and soil beside rivers. BBS distribution map
