The texts for the species descriptions of lichens are based on a combination of the 2018 edition of Frank Dobson’s Lichens – An Illustrated Guide to the British and Irish Species, the second (2009) edition of The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland as edited by C. W. Smith, A. Aptroot, B. J. Coppins, A. Fletcher, O. L. Gilbert, P. W. James and P. A. Wolseley, and my own experience in the field. Nick Hodgett’s Cladonia: a Field Guide (published in 1992) has been instrumental in understanding the differences between different Cladonia species better. The revised names are taken from the revised chapters for the third edition of The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland, as they are published by the British Lichen Society online. I consult the website of this society on a regular basis for further information on species, and for distribution maps.

The texts for the species descriptions of bryophytes are based on a combination of the 2010 edition of Mosses and Liverworts of Britain and Ireland – a Field Guide as edited by Ian Atherton, Sam Bosanquet and Mark Lawley, the 2014 edition of the Atlas of British & Irish Bryophytes that was edited by T. L. Blockeel, S. D. S. Bosanquet, M. O. Hill and C. D. Preston, and species information as found on the website of the British Bryological Society.
