A leafy liverwort that forms a crowd of small and thin gemmae-bearing shoots that stick up from the substratum. The pale green species mostly has three-lobed leaves.
In Scotland, Barbilophozia attenuata has a scattered upland distribution where it grows on logs, stumps, tree trunks, peaty soil and base-poor boulders in damp, shady woodlands, and in block screes, on sandstone crags and in ravines. BBS distribution map
