Bartramia pomiformis

English name: Common apple-moss

A distinctive acrocarpous moss that forms pale, glaucous green cushions or tufts. The leaves are narrowly spearhead-shaped and sharply pointed. When moist, they stick out from the stem, when dry, they curl up. The capsules are spherical and asymmetrical and become ridged and furrowed with age.

Capsules mature in summer.

In Scotland, Bartramia pomiformis is widespread in upland areas where it is found on acidic or mildly base-rich rock, especially sandstone. Habitats include rock crevices, rocky banks in woodland. BBS distribution map
