Dicranoweisia cirrata

Engish name: Common pincushion

An acrocarpous moss that forms small to yellow-green to mid-green, medium-sized cushions. When moist the leaves are erect and somewhat wavy, but they become crisped when dry. They are spearhead-shaped and gradually narrow to a finely acute tip. The leaf margins are recurved. Capsules are cylindrical and held upright on a yellow seta which is often curved when moist.

Capsules mature in winter and spring.

In Scotland, Dicranoweisia cirrata is widespread, except in the northwest Highlands, and is found in copses, riverbanks and roadsides on trunks and branches of trees and fenceposts. BBS distribution map
