Dicranum majus

English name: Greater fork-moss

A distinctive acrocarpous moss with long leaves that are curve in the same direction and hardly alter when dry. The leaves are narrowly spearhead-shaped and taper to a long, fine tip that is regularly toothed.

Capsules mature in winter.

In Scotland, Dicranum majus is widespread in sheltered, acidic to mildly basic habitats such as oak, birch and coniferous and among rock in upland areas. BBS distribution map

Look out for Hylocomium splendens, Mnium hornum, Polytrichastrum formosum, Rhytidiadelphus loreus and Thuidium tamariscinum nearby.
