Lobaria virens

Revised name: Ricasolia virens

A distinctive foliose species with a thallus that, when dry, is green-grey to grey-brown and has a smooth, almost oily appearance. When wet, the thallus turns green. The short, narrow lobes overlap and are almost entirely adpressed to the substratum. Apothecia are usually abundant and have red-brown discs with a warted margin.

Thallus: C-, K- or K+ yellow

In Scotland, Lobaria virens has a western distribution where it grows on oak, ash, elm and beech and sheltered rocks in ancient woodland. BLS distribution map
