Melanelixia subaurifera

A foliose species with matt lobes and isidia that arise from small irregular swellings on the lobe surface where the cortex breaks down. These isidia are easily eroded, leaving scars that often have a yellowish appearance.

Cortex: K-. Medulla and soredia: C+ red, K-, UV-

Melanelixia subaurifera is very common throughout Scotland where it is found on the smooth bark of neutral to acid-barked trees, fences and sometimes rocks. BLS distribution map

Melanelixia subaurifera is distinguished from Melanelixia glabratula on basis of matt rather than glossy surface of the thallus, and the isidia arising from irregular swellings across the thallus rather than gathering in the centre. It also tends to grow on twigs and branches rather than trunks.
