Melanohalea septentrionalis

A foliose species with red-brown to dark brown lobes that are adpressed thallus and  form rosettes. The lobes are often pitted and have minute pseudocyphellae. Apothecia tend to be very abundant and have red-brown discs and a smooth margin.

In Scotland, Melanohaela septentrionalis is restricted to the Cairngorms where it is found on well-lit birch twigs, especially in the margins of woods. BLS distribution map

Melanohalea septentrionalis can be found alongside Cetraria sepincola and Tuckermannopsis chlorophylla.
