A leafy liverwort with yellowish green thalli that end in narrow, gemmae-bearing branches which stick out from the substrate. The gemmae are held at the very tip of the branches, 

In Scotland, Metzgeria fruticulosa has a southern and coastal lowland distribution, where it is mainly found on willow, elder and elm, and occasionally on concrete. BBS distribution map
