Mnium hornum

English name: Swan’s-neck thyme-moss

An acrocarpous moss that is dark, dull-green moss and distinctive looking female and male plants. Leaves have a toothed border of long, narrow cells and the nerve usually ends a little below the leaf tip. The capsules ate pendulous and have a lid that narrows abruptly into a very short point.

Capsules mature from late spring to summer.

In Scotland, Mnium hornum is widespread in non-calcareous woodland, hedges and streambanks where it grows on tree bases, logs, rocks and soil. BBS distribution map

Confusion species: Atrichum undulatum and Plagiomnium undulatum
