Nardia scalaris

English name: Ladder flapwort

A liverwort species that forms mats or turfs of prostrate or upright stems that may be dull, pale green, red or blackish-purple. The leaves are rounded and underleaves stick out from the stem in a peg-like manner. This species is aromatic.

In Scotland, Nardia scalaris is widespread on peaty banks, forest road cuttings and footpaths, old quarries and in fine scree. BBS distribution map
