Orthotrichum anomalum

English name: Anomalous bristle-moss

An acrocarpous moss that forms low cushions of green or brown, straight-leaved shoots with reddish-brown capsules that are held well above the leaves. When dry, each capsule is strongly ribbed.

Capsules mature in spring and early summer.

In Scotland, Orthotrichum anomalum is widespread on exposed limestone and manmade substrata like stonework, including bridges, churches and walls. BBS distribution map

Look out for Grimmia pulvinata, Schistidium crassipulum and Tortula muralis nearby.
