Peltigera canina

A foliose species with grey to brown-grey thalli that forms large patches. The bullate lobes are covered in a white tomentum and usually have downturned tips. The under surface is almost white and has much-branched, bushy rhizines which meet at the base. The apothecia are dark brown to black and saddle-shaped.

In Scotland, Peltigera canina has a mainly coastal distribution, though there are some scattered inland records. It is found mainly on slightly basic to acid soils and dunes and dry grassland. BLS distribution map

Peltigera canina is distinguished from Peltigera membranacea on basis of the flatter veins and the much-branched, bushy rhizines that meet at the base so that the tops of the veins appear covered in a shaggy layer.
