A foliose lichen with large thalli that are grey-brown when dry and olive-green when wet, and that have a appear somewhat shiny. The lower surface of the lobes is cream to light brown, with faint flattened veins and paler, simple rhizines which usually have tufted tips. Red-brown, and longer than broad, apothecia are usually abundant.
Peltigera hymenina is very common throughout Scotland and found on mossy dykes and tree stumps, and on acid soils amongst short grass, sand and peat. BLS distribution map
Peltigera hymenina is distinguished from Peltigera membranacea on basis of its smooth rather than bullate lobes with ascending rather than curled-under margins.
