Ramalina fastigiata

This is a fruticose species that often forms neat, rounded cushions with relatively wide, much branched and wrinkled lobes that are often swollen. It is easily recognised by the apothecia that are located at the end of the branches. When well developed, these can shield the thallus.

Ramalina fastigata is absent from higher altitudes in central Scotland. Elsewhere, it is common on well-lit, nutrient-rich and nutrient-enriched bark, and can also be found on soft basic rock. BLS distribution map

Ramalina fastigiata is distinguished from Ramalina farinacea by the presence of apothecia rather than soredia, and it is distinguished from Ramalina fraxinea by its bushy growth rather than long and pendant, strap-shaped lobes.
