A thallose liverwort that has much-branched thalli that stick up from the substratum like tiny, green hands.
Capsules mature from March to August.
In Scotland, Riccardia palmata is mainly found in the Highlands where it is characteristic of rotting logs in humid woodland, and, in the wettest regions, sometimes grows on peat, on bank and amongst rocks. BBS distribution map
