English name: Thickpoint grimmia
A distinctive acrocarpous moss that forms rounded cushions or flat patches that may look hoary due to the hairpoints of leaves. The capsules are largely hidden by the leaves that sheath them.
Capsules mature from January to April.
In Scotland, Schistidium crassipilum is widespread on limestone and base-rich sandstone, and on manmade substrata such as calcareous walls, bridges and tarmac paths. BBS distribution map
