English name: Feathery bog-moss
A bogmoss with medium to large shoots that are dull to bright green, yellowish, or, when dried out, almost white. There can be reddish tints at the base of branches and male plants may have a darker ends to the capitulum. Capitula are at most moderately stellate and no terminal bud is visible. Feathery and long-leaved aquatic forms resemble drowned kittens when lifted from the water.
In Scotland, Sphagnum cuspidatum is widespread in very acidic, aquatic habitats such as bogpools, and in runnels, ditches and old peat cuttings on moorland. BBS distribution map
Look out for Sphagnum denticulatum, Sphagnum fallax, Sphagnum papillosum and Sphagnum tenellum nearby.
