English name: Warnstorf’s bog-moss
A bog-moss with flat-topped, stellate capitula that forms soft carpets. It is vivid crimson, but may be green in shade. The lower part of the shoot may be blackish red.
In Scotland, Sphagnum warnstorfii has a scattered upland distribution where it grows in base-rich flushes on mountains and moorland, wet scrubby wooland, marshes, streambanks and flushed valley bottoms. BBS distribution map
