A foliose species with brown-grey to dark brown, single-lobed thalli that are rounded.. When young, these lobes ascend, but over time the tips become down-turned. Dark brown, coralloid isidia form clusters on the surface, ridges and margins of the lobes. The lower surface is pale brown, tomentose and has pale cyphellae. When damp, this species has a strong fishy smell.
In Scotland, Sticta fuliginosa has a mainly western distribution where it is found on mossy trees and damp rocks in humid, sheltered situations in ancient, oceanic woodland. BLS distribution map
