Tortula truncata

English name: Common pottia

An acrocarpous moss with small, scattered or clustered shoots with broadly oblong leaves that are widest above the middle. The capsules are hardly any longer than wide.

Capsules mature in autumn and winter in particular.

In Scotland, Tortula truncata has a mainly lowland and coastal distribution where it is found on bare soil in ruderal and disturbed habitats such as arable fields, pastures, quarries and on tracksides. BBS distribution map
