Zygodon viridissimus

English name: Green yoke-moss

An acrocarpous species that forms small, light green tufts and patches. When moist, the shortly pointed leaves are held at a wide angle from the stem. Dry leaves become twisted and adpressed to the stem.

In Scotland, Zygodon viridissimus is widespread in lowland and coastal regions where it is found on lightly shaded, base-enriched bark od species like ash, elder, sycamore and willow, and on coastal rocks. BBS distribution map

Look out for Frullania dilitata, Hypnum cupressiforme, Metzgeria furcata and Orthotrichum affine nearby.

Confusion species: epiphytic Orthotrichum and Ulota species, including Orthotrichum affine and Ulota bruchii
