Bryum rubens

English name: Crimson-tuber thread-moss

An acrocarpous moss with stems and leaves that may be reddish and rhizoids that may be reddish brown. Bright red tubers, which may be white when young, may also be found at the base of lower leaves and on longer rhizoids.

Capsules mature in spring.

In Scotland, Bryum rubens has a mainly lowland and coastal distribution where it is found on bare soil in, for example, arable fields, waste ground and gardens. BBS distribution map
