Cladonia fimbriata

This species has a primary thallus that consists of small, incised squamules that may be slightly sorediate. The podetia are recognisable by their slender stems that open abruptly into a very regular cup that is covered in delicate, greenish, farinose soredia and lack any squamules or corticate granules.

In Scotland, Cladonia fimbriata is widespread on rotting wood, humus pockets in walls, and dunes, where it is often found amongst mosses. BLS distribution map

On trunks of acid-barked trees and on fenceposts, Cladonia fimbriata is often found alongside Cladonia coniocraea.

Cladonia fimbriata is distinguished from Cladonia chlorophaea on basis of the podetia that abruptly widen into a neatly rounded cup.
