Cladonia coniocraea

A distinctive species that forms extensive patches that are grey-green when dry. The squamules have incised tips, a pale lower surface and are often slightly sorediate. The podetia are corticate, but slightly squamulose at the base, and become sorediate above. The podetia may be pointed or have a very narrow cup, and are usually slightly curved.

In Scotland, Cladonia coniocraea is widespread in woods, where it is found on the base of acid barked trees like birch and Scots pine, and on decaying stumps and logs. It is also commonly found on the top of fenceposts. BLS distribution map

On trunks of acid-barked trees and on fenceposts, Cladonia coniocraea is often found alongside Cladonia fimbriata.
