Cladonia gracilis

A fruticose species in which the basal squamules disappear early. The spiky podetia are olive to dark brown and become darker brown-black towards the base. The spikes end in a narrow and shallow cup from the rim of which may appear small, finger-like protrusions. Apothecia and pycnidia are dark brown.

In Scotland, Cladonia gracilis is particularly widespread in upland areas where it grows on sandy or acid soils, amongst rocks and rotting wood in heathlands, dunes and montane situations. BLS distribution map
