Frullania dilatata

English name: Dilated scalewort

A leafy liverwort with greenish or brownish sub-pinnately branched shoots. It has rounded leaves and large, helmet-shaped lobules which are about as wide as they are long. Underleaves are present and female shoots have warty perianths.

Capsules are found throughout the year.

In Scotland, Frullania dilatata is widespread on well-lit trees and shrubs, including ash, elm, alder, hazel, willow, elder and oak, in sheltered and dry locations, and on coastal rock and turf. BBS distribution map

Look out for Homalothecium sericeum, Hypnum cupressiforme, Metzgeria furcata and Radula complanata nearby.
