Xanthoria calcicola

A large foliose species that consists of deep orange, contorted lobes which become densely covered in coralloid or wart-like isidia in the centre. When present, apothecia are usually slightly stalked, with an irregular, often contorted margin.

In Scotland, Xanthoria calcicola occurs intermittently in coastal and lowland areas where it is found on calcareous and nutrient-rich saxicolous substrata like coastal rocks and gravestones. BLS distribution map

Xanthoria calcicola is distinguished from Xanthoria parietina and Xanthoria aureola by presence of coralloid isidia.
