Cyphelium inquinans

New name: Acolium inquinans

A crustose species with a thick and warted thallus that is pale or dark grey. Irregularly shaped apothecia may be innate or sessile, and often have a white pruinose margin.

In Scotland, Cyphelium inquinans is rare on exposed old fenceposts, and on the bark and wood of pine, larch, oak and birch. BLS distribution map

Cyphelium inquinans is distinguished from Lecidea species on basis of the black mark left on the finger after rubbing an apothecium.
