Toninia aromatica

New name: Toniniopsis aromatica

A squamulose species with a light to dark grey thallus that is often tinged brown or green. The squamules are warted, rounded and contorted with paler spots and ridges towards the centre. The flat apothecia are black and may be faintly pruinose.

In Scotland, Toninia aromatica is a mainly coastal and lowland species where it occurs on soft calcareous rocks and mortar, in seepage cracks and on consolidated soil and shell-sand dunes. BLS distribution map
